Garth was a illiterate farmer whose farm was located at what is now the intersection of Garth and Broadway across from Boone Library. He regretted the fact he couldn't read or write and for that reason he donated to the fundraiser to get the university located in CoMO in 1839. In 1892 when Academic Hall burned down he was bedridden and blind and donated to the fundraiser to build Jesse Hall. He is the only person who donated both in 1839 and 1892 - and he was an illiterate farmer.
